Engineering with the Girls
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th, it is a day that commemorates the social, political and economic achievements of women. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”
In recognition of this, Miss Chester’s Yr 10 GCSE Engineering students and Yr 9 Technology students were invited to Komatsu in Birtley. Komatsu is the world’s second largest manufacturer of construction equipment and mining equipment. Komatsu only has five female engineers, one in each of the five engineering departments and three females who work on the production line out of the 600 employees at its site in Birtley. The female students learnt about the company and had a factory tour. They also had a chance to meet the female engineers and get an insight into their different job roles and their progression into engineering.
