Course Work
Pupils visited Sedgefield race course for a Racing to School Education Programme visit. The racecourse gave us unique access to areas which the public are usually restricted from and provided pupils with the opportunity to explore key skills in a unique, and outdoor learning environment. Although the main focus was Maths, a number of other subjects were touched on including Geography, history and science.
Throughout the morning students engaged in a variety of fun problem solving & practical learning activities, including – practising maths in The Parade Ring where they had to calculate how many horses can safely walk around at any one time. The Weighing Room drew on numeracy skills as pupils explored weights & measures and the effect weight has on a horse’s performance, and on the course, they learned about race distances, using metric and imperial measurements, and the geometry in the construction of the hurdles & fences. The day included an activity pack and allowed for a number of cross-curricular activities. The pupils had all had an enjoyable day and their attitude and participation was exemplary.
