The Power of Pet Therapy
Last Friday we invited in some animal friends and their handlers to our Pupil Support Centre. Pupils in the PSC were delighted to handle a selection of cute critters including tortoises, rabbits and guinea pigs and a dog in an effort to help them relax, something particularly needed during the stressful exam season. The presence of an animal prompts the body to release serotonin, prolactin and oxytocin. These hormones generate a relaxation and stress-reducing response that can lower symptoms of depression and sadness, whilst helping to support good mental health.
