Celebrating VE 80

This week’s Aspire Theme of the Week is the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. We have joined with the rest of the country to mark this very important event in our history. During assemblies, Mrs Richardson discussed with students the facts about VE Day and why the event is still celebrated 80 years later. Mrs Richardson also presented some fascinating information about the former students of Southmoor who gave their lives during the war – their names are proudly presented on the board displayed in reception.

In Aspire AM, students had the opportunity to listen to a letter sent to everyone from Bombardier Tom Jones, 103 years old, World War 2 veteran. Each form group was asked to reply to Bombardier Jones with their thoughts and feelings and reflections on Bombardier Jones’ experiences as part of the VE Mail project.

Thursday 8th May, marked the actual 80-year anniversary since the announcement that World War 2 was over. Students had the opportunity to take part in some special celebrations in the Humanities department with a street party atmosphere where students could browse through a pop-up VE Exhibition in the suitably festive humanities corridor. Classic music was played from the era in the restaurant and in classrooms between lessons. Staff also joined in and were encouraged to wear red, white and blue to mark the celebrations.
