Boxing Brilliant

Sunderland Amateur Boxing Club sent a team to the Porto Box Cup in Portugal, Europe’s largest boxing tournament, featuring over 1,000 competitors. The event ran from 24th–28th March 2026, and Southmoor Academy students represented the club with distinction.

Kade S (Year 10) (57kg) began strongly, dominating his quarter-final and edging a semi-final split win, securing a medal. In the final, he faced a tough opponent from Didcot, ultimately taking silver in his first international competition.

Blake S (Year 12) (67kg), a national champion, outpointed his Ukrainian quarter-final opponent and reached the semi-finals, where a persistent nosebleed ended the bout. Blake also took silver, gaining valuable international experience.

Grayson F (Year 11) (60kg) impressed with a stoppage win in the semi-finals, delivering a decisive body shot. He narrowly lost the final in a split decision, earning silver.

Zac M (Year 11) (Youth 67kg) faced a skilled Cuban opponent. Despite a standing count in round two, Zac pushed relentlessly and earned a well-deserved silver medal in his first international outing.

Overall, Sunderland ABC brought nine boxers to the tournament, returning with four silver and four bronze medals, showcasing the skill, determination, and talent of Southmoor Academy students at an international level. Well done to all who took part!
