It is only 28 weeks to go until our group of Year 9 and 10 volunteers head off to Kenya with African Adventures, alongside students from Sandhill View Academy, and colleagues from the Foundation of Light. When this opportunity was launched, students were encouraged to raise as much money as possible to cover the cost of their trip. We have already mentioned in previous blog editions some of the fundraising activities, but here are more examples of the amazing activities that have been taking place over recent months:
- Matthew has been car washing in his local area for the last few months and raised money with football cards and a stall at Hill View Junior’s Summer Fayre.
- Lucas also supported the Hill View Junior’s Summer Fayre, and successfully ran the Sunderland 5k.
- Noah completed the Coast to Coast cycle ride with his dad – three days of cycling across the country on one of the hottest weekends of the year! He has also been car washing in his Uncle’s village.
- Alexandra contacted lots of businesses to donate vouchers for a raffle, receiving vouchers from KFC, Nando’s, Cafe Nero, and local beauty and nail businesses. She also earned money from ironing and created hampers with the vouchers, raising £600. She set up a GoFundMe page and has been washing dishes in a cafe!
- James, Alexandra, Kayla and Lucas held a cake, pie and sweet sale at their local DWP office and raised awareness of the trip with staff.
- Harry has been raising money with raffle tickets to win prizes and through a chocolate box card.
- George and Sam took part in a sponsored climb of Helvellyn in August. Both also joined Harrison for the Sunderland Big Bike Ride in July. They, along with Noah and Arthur, raised money through bag packing and tombolas at Asda. George has also run football cards and collected donations through easyfundraising.
These students, alongside all of the volunteers who are raising money, are an inspiration and fantastic ambassadors for Southmoor Academy. It will be brilliant to follow their adventures over the next few months and during their time in Kenya in March/April 2027.
