A group of Year 9 and 10 pupils attended The Sill, in Northumberland National Park, for a geographical careers event. Lana and Rebecca (Year 10) described their visit for us below:
‘When we arrived at The Sill, we began with a careers talk involving what types of jobs are needed to look after the National Park. We discussed what a park ranger was and even got to speak with one of the rangers for Northumberland National Park. We also discussed the types of jobs that aren’t necessarily thought of when thinking of the park, including jobs that involve IT and promoting tourism for the park.
Then we walked to Hadrian’s Wall, a key historic landmark of the UK, to use the skills we had developed during the talk and considered how these skills are applied in the real-world. This gave everyone an appreciation of the importance of protecting natural and historical environments. The views were incredible and vastly different to what we are used to seeing in the city centre!
Overall, the trip was one that allowed pupils to gain experiences outside of the classroom whilst also seeing the real-life situations of people who work in geographical careers.
